NOTARIZATION 101

Notarization of documents requires acceptable identification, such as:

  • California Driver’s License
  • California Identification Card
  • Canada Driver’s License
  • Foreign Passports stamped by U.S. Customs
  • Inmate ID Card
  • Mexico Driver’s License
  • Other States Driver’s License
  • Other State Identification Card
  • U.S. Passport
  • U.S .Military ID Card

Note:  For a person who does not have a current or acceptable form of identification you may use two credible identifying witnesses.

A credible identifying witness is someone who can “vouch” for the signer’s identity before the Notary Public.  Essentially the credible witness is acting as a human ID card for the signer.

State rules vary for credible witnesses. Some states require a witness to personally know both the Notary and the signer, and others only require them to know the signer. In any case, the credible witness cannot have any interest in the document being notarized.

A credible witness must take an oath or affirmation that the signer’s identity is in fact genuine.

A common use for a notarization with a credible witness is as follows:

  • A disabled or Elderly person who might only have a form of identification that is expired
  • A person who has changed their name, but has not yet updated their name on his/her identification/Driver’s License

NOTARY FEES:

  • The State of California regulates a set fee of $10.00 per signature notarized, per document
  • $35.00 travel fee within a 15 mile travel radius of zip code 90503. Please call for low rates beyond the referenced zip code radius
  • After a 10 minute grace period, wait time charges will incur and are billed in increments of $10 per every 15 minutes of wait time.

NOTE:

If for any reason the notarization (signing of documents) does not occur when the Notary arrives or if an appointment is canceled within 30 minutes or less prior to the scheduled time the travel fees are still due and required.
